Positive Thinking … By The Numbers
Positive thinking works … it is the foundation for the scientifically recognized bandora cîhanê. However, the vast majority of the public scoffs at the notion of positive thoughts; they have tried to specifically engage them, but their efforts were in vain. Regardless of the disbelief in positive thinking, one third of all medical healings are attributed to the placebo effect.
The big question: Why does positive thinking work for some people and not for others?
The answer is dependent on the “beliefs” held in each of du minds, the bîrbir mind and the binehişî mind. The conscious mind, connected with our source, our spirituality, is the creative mind that expresses our wishes, desires and aspirations … wishful thinking. In contrast, the subconscious mind is a hard drive of programmed instincts, experiences and acquired habits.
We can personally engage with the creative imagination (vision) in our conscious mind. However, we cannot envision the content of the behavioral programs in the massive database of the subconscious. The effectiveness of a conscious intention is profoundly influenced by the “invisible” programs in the subconscious mind. The result of a conscious positive thought is dependent upon whether that thought is supported by, or in conflict with, subconscious programs. This is where the heart of the problem lies!
If the subconscious mind has programs to support the wishes of the creative conscious mind, then a positive thought has a high probability of manifesting. In contrast, if the subconscious programs conflict with conscious mind’s intentions, materializing those positive thoughts is very unlikely.
However, the results also depend upon which mind is dominant in controlling cognition. A program in the subconscious mind operating 95% of the day can easily override wishes and desires of the conscious mind operating only 5% of the time. In our development, a placebo belief acquired through subconscious experiences about the effectiveness of a drug or specific surgery can override a conscious mind that actively doubts the effectiveness of the therapy. These findings suggest that a placebo effect does not even require that a person consciously hope for or believe in a positive outcome. The subconscious mind can manifest a placebo response.
The inverse of the placebo effect, called nocebo effect, recognizes that a negative attitude or expectation can induce any disease and even death. This is a most important point considering that 70% or more of our thoughts are negative, disempowering and self-sabotaging. Collectively, positive and negative thoughts are equally powerful in controlling the character of our lives, however, they create opposing outcomes. These insights emphasize the ancient wisdom of the Buddha, “What we think, we become” … be they positive or negative in content.
Life experiences come down to the positive and negative nature of the beliefs and intentions held in the mind that is in control. And that’s where the “numbers” come in … which mind is in control.
One can enhance the prospects of manifesting positive thought using “mindfulness,” that is staying in the conscious creative mind and not defaulting to subconscious control. In today’s active world mindfulness is very difficult to achieve. A much more efficient way to ensure positive thinking success would be to reprogram the subconscious mind with your conscious mind’s wishes and desires. That way both minds will cooperate in securing the future you desire. Going back to this month’s video newsletter, will I drink the strychnine? While my conscious mind is aware that it is possible to do this without harmful side effects, I am pretty sure my subconscious has a different take on that. So no matter how much positive thinking my conscious mind can muster, I am not ready to challenge the invisible beliefs held in my subconscious mind. The most toxic thing I’ll drink today is a Diet Pepsi!
