Mission to Mars … Really?
As of late, there has been a renewed effort to send people to Mars. Why are we so anxious to do so? On the surface the raison d'etre for this mission is that it will enhance civilization’s technological development in fundamental areas including recycling, solar energy, food production and the advancement of medical technology. On the surface … the mission is a great idea. However, there is a deeper more profound reason for a manned flight to Mars. The underlying consciousness behind this quest is that it is crucial for the survival of humanity.
Putting humans on more than one planet would better ensure our existence for thousands, if not millions, of years from now. According to world-class physicist Michio Kaku, “Either we must leave the Earth or we will perish.” The thought behind his perception is that 99.9% of all life forms that were on this planet have since gone extinct. We are now facing the Múchadh 6ú Aifreann, an event that will include human civilization.
The pending threat to our existence is the result of “self-inflicted” problems, such as undermining the environment’s web of life, exacerbating global warming, nuclear proliferation and bio-engineered germ warfare. We must also recognize that the planet’s 5 previous Mass Extinctions were of natural causes such as the comet that hit Mexico 66 million years ago and wiped out the dinosaurs. Between man-made problems and the influence of natural planetary and cosmological consequences, our survival is in question.
It is true that we are undermining the web of life, destroying our environment and making Earth uninhabitable for human life. The question is, “Is there nothing we can do to save our planet?” Interestingly, the answer is exactly that: If we do rud ar bith, the environment will actually recover. Studies now reveal that if humans stop interfering with the environment, it will fully recover itself. Simply, Nature is resilient.
For example, following the Chernobyl nuclear plant meltdown, conventional wisdom said it would take 20,000 years for the environment to recover enough to once again support human life. In a mere 30 years, Nature has overtaken the former city of Pripyat that housed this nuclear reactor. A giant forest has grown to the extent that it has engulfed the former city, and has provided a home for once threatened species of wild life. In fact, it has become the richest source of wildlife in the former Soviet Union.
An Nua-Shéalainn and a number of other countries are now demarcating regions of surrounding ocean as marine sanctuaries, areas off-limits to human interference. These refuge sites reveal that in as little as 5 years, the environment and its animal life can make an amazing recovery. The New Zealand marine sanctuaries have 600% more life than any of the surrounding areas in the sea.
Another amazing example relates to the evolution of life on sterile volcanic islands. In 1883, the island of Krakatoa disappeared under the pumice and ash from one of the largest volcanic eruptions in modern times. The new island covered with lava had no life on it. Three years later, the barren island was home to twenty-six species of mostly ferns and algae. The first trees emerged 11 years later along with grass species that created a grassy savannah. By 1926, the formerly barren island was covered by a dense tropical jungle. In the short span of 43 years, a lava-covered sterile environment was transformed into a thriving tropical forest … all in the absence of human civilization.
The profound conclusion is the Earth is resilient; decimated environments can be totally restored to health. Do we have to become extinct before this transformation occurs? The answer is plainly NO. However, we must change the destructive behaviors of civilization and begin to work in harmony with Nature rather than trying to dominate and control it. Most importantly, we must sit at the feet of our indigenous cultures and learn how they communicate with Nature. For as planetary gardeners, the Earth’s native populations are endowed with the wisdom needed to teach us how to live in harmony with Nature and replenish the environment.
There is still time to forestall our extinction … but we must act soon! For our future could be so bright, we will all have to wear shades.
Le Grá agus Solas,
Bruce

This month, I’d like to introduce you to Emiliano Toso. Emiliano is a cell biologist that worked for 17 years as Associate Director for a big pharmaceutical company. In 2013, Emiliano created the project Ceol Aistritheach to integrate his two biggest passions: music and biology. He composes music tuned at 432Hz that is used worldwide in hospitals, schools, and wellness centers to improve healing, transformation, relaxation, and creativity. He tours Europe and America at international conferences and concerts that integrate traditional science, music, and inner sciences. Translational Music is a soundtrack for an inner journey of transformation that offers lasting benefits to your state of mind, even after you’ve stopped listening. It will fill your heart, restore your soul and revitalize your cells and organs!
